Cognitive Development in Middle Childhood

Between the ages of about 7 and 11, children are in the period of cognitive development that   Jean Piaget   referred to as the   concrete operational stage . During this period of intellectual development, kids become increasingly skilled at understanding logical and   concrete information . However, they still struggle to grasp hypothetical or abstract concepts. At this age, kids are able to focus on multiple aspects of a problem or situation and become less egocentric, meaning that they are able to think about and understand things from different viewpoints. However, they tend to be more focused on the "here and now" and less on the future consequences. How They Think Cognitive abilities   such as concentration and memory improve significantly during the middle childhood years. Kids this age have much better attention spans than they did in   early childhood   and they are better able to remember information for longer spans of time. Not...

The Sleep-Pain Relationship

Image
Sleep is a critical and complex process that science is just beginning to understand, and recent discoveries are providing intriguing information about what goes on when the lights go out. When we are at rest, science has found that our bodies and biological systems actually become quite active. Our brains consolidate memories and clear out the day's gunk, while our bodies are repairing and renewing at the cellular level. Research in the past decade has found that sleep affects everything from immunity and weight to moods and even learning. Several of these processes are thought to work bidirectionally with sleep, meaning they both influence and are influenced by the quality and quantity of rest we get. National Sleep Foundation  polls find that 2/3 of people with chronic pain also experience sleep troubles. Acute pain can also affect sleep, such as during recovery from injury or surgery. Of the relationship between pain and sleep, Sleep Disorder Center director  Dav...

NASA Blue Beam Project

Image
The Blue Beam Project involves two things. A technologically simulated "second coming" and the reemergence of new " MONTAUK " type projects that have the ability to take up a whole bunch of people as in a "rapture" type of situation and whisk the whole bunch into never-never land. Ironically, portions of the holographic projections have the potential for changing the planet into oneness with God. Unfortunately, this operates on the premise that Man shall somehow become God in human form and control other Men and dictate all actions and thoughts. The calculated resistance to the new religion, the New World Order and the new "Messiah" will entail human loss on a massive scale in the ensuing " holy wars ". The "BLUE BEAM PROJECT" will pretend to be the universal fulfillment of the prophecies of old; as major an event as that which took place 2000 years ago. In principle, it will make use of the sky as a holographi...

Nomophobia & Smartphone Addiction Among Children

Image
Nomophobia & Smartphone Addiction Among Children The term “addiction” is usually associated with alcoholism and drug abuse. Yet people do get addicted to different stimulants that are quite legal substances. Smartphones changed our primary concept of a cell phone. It is no longer used strictly to establish audio communication. Smartphones allow us to have our camera, GPS navigator, video game terminal, and even our own library in hand. Nevertheless, the biggest and most important aspect is that a smartphone gives us access to the Internet. Nomophobia (no-mobile-phobia) is defined as the fear of being out of cell phone contact. Have you thought about how long you can go without checking your cell phone? How about your children and their smartphones? The problem among teens is that they have become so engrossed with their smartphones that they are missing the world around them. So-called smartphone zombies are now walking during class breaks and at hom...

MIDDLE CHILDHOOD

Image
MIDDLE CHILDHOOD The middle years of childhood (ages 6 to 12) represent the second stage in early human development, between early childhood and adolescence. As well as being an outcome indicator of early childhood experiences, middle childhood is also a powerful predictor of adolescent adjustment and success. For this reason, middle childhood is an opportune time to optimize health and promote development.   A two-year-old child also requires constant supervision, lest his burgeoning curiosity lead to trouble. Fast forward to age seven and you'll see that the child has become quite adept at doing things independently and is probably quite proud of such accomplishments. During middle childhood, kids become more competent and confident. Parents begin to place trust in the child, allowing him to take on daily tasks such as selecting his own clothes and making his own breakfast. Family friendships are still vital, but children are far less clingy at this age. Unlike the toddle...
